School of the Soldier Event

Engineer Corps

May 3, 1861

Gen. D. Foxwell

Sir:

I have the honor to report to you on the location of the recent preparations affected by the 4th Battalion, Provisional Army of the Confederate States, from April 23 through the 24 in the Village of Lyme. Appended to this report is the map which I made of the location. In preparing the map I determined distance by pacing, with each pace being approximately 2 feet in length, which bearings were obtained from a compass.

The Village of Lyme rests upon a small elevated rise which is well drained. The village is accessible by both wagon and rail with a rail yard being not more than a half mile from the village. Both potable water and firewood are readily available within the village and the immediately surrounding area.

The village consists of a mixture of barns, mercantile establishments, residences, a church, a school, and one tavern. Ample space for the establishment of individual camps can be readily found within the confines of the village as indicated on the enclosed map. The village green is approximately one quarter acre in area and was very well suited for company and battalion drill maneuvers.

I would recommend the Village of Lyme as a possible location for future camps of instruction given both the suitability of the terrain for drilling and water.

Your Obedient Servant,

 R. J. Fryman

Captain of Engineers

Provisional Army of the Confederate States
